Uncomfortable Truth

During the trial of the British Army for the Boston Massacre, John Adams acting as the defense lawyer stated:

“Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”

Oh Glorious Day

I received a response to yesterday’s devotional from a dear sister in Christ named Carolyn that I just had to share part of with all of you:

Sure a lot of things are not pleasant, and I know things are and will get worse – but why worry? I have the Lord, and He is ALL that matters! He knows! And if things get so bad that war breaks out or our country collapses or whatever else – Jesus still IS. He saved me. Maybe not saved my life for this life – but certainly for eternity, and that’s all that matters.

By All Who Have Pleasure In Them

I so love it when the Holy Spirit reveals Scripture to me fresh and anew. I began reading the psalms for the day and started at Psalm 111 and something in verse 2 just struck me, so much so that after reading the psalm I began immediately writing about it. Read the psalm in its entirety and then I’ll share with you what struck me so:

“Praise the LORD! I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation. The works of the LORD are great, studied by all who have pleasure in them. His work is honorable and glorious, and His righteousness endures forever. He has made His wonderful works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. He has given food to those who fear Him; He will ever be mindful of His covenant. He has declared to His people the power of His works, in giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of His hands are verity and justice; all His precepts are sure. They stand fast forever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness. He has sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant forever: holy and awesome is His name. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.” (Psalm 111)

The Foundation Of All Practical Religion

I have been teaching on Wednesday nights a series by John Ortberg titled “If You Want to Walk on Water, You Have to Get Out of the Boat.” The lesson looks at discerning God’s will for our lives and then in faith stepping out obediently to His call on our lives. It simply comes down to trust.

There Is Hope In Your Future

This has been a tough week for some of my friends. One of my brothers in Christ with whom I worship lost his father on Wednesday. On Valentines Day a man I used to officiate football with lost his beloved wife to cancer. On the same day the National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA) lost one of its strongest Arkansas members to a massive heart attack. And finally another great NFRA warrior from Arizona passed away and was buried on Tuesday.

Additionally, twenty-nine months ago today my family lost our precious Eddie, my only son, in Iraq.

I’ll Never Have To Hide Again

Another song Jennifer Knapp does on her CD “Kansas” is titled “Romans” and this song challenges me in the area of pride. At times I find myself impressed with me because of some biblical insight I may have received or because of my biblical training. That’s about the time the Lord always finds a way to humble me and let me know that I am not even close to being the smartest person in the room. The first verse from Jennifer’s song says:

Just when I think I’ve got it,
    It’s gone.
When I think I know the answer
And I dare to raise my hand its wrong.
Stop. Stop. Stop this foolish pride of mine.
That dares to drag me far away from you.
When I try to do it my way I always lose.
I always lose your point of view.

To One Who Sees Past All I See

This may end up being favorite songs week.

Another Christian artist whose music really touches my soul is Jennifer Knapp. Her 2001 CD “Kansas” is a masterpiece and it begins with an acapella titled “Faithful to Me.” Here are the words:

All the chisels I’ve dulled carving idols of stone
That have crumbled like sand neath the waves
I’ve recklessly built all my dreams in the sand
Just to watch them all wash away
Through another day, another trial,
Another chance to reconcile to one who sees past all I see
And reaching out my weary hand I pray that you’d understand
You’re the only one who’s faithful to me
All the pennies I’ve wasted in my wishing well
I’ve thrown like stones to the sea
I’ve cast my lots, dropped my guard searched aimlessly
For a faith to be faithful to me
Through another day, another trial
Another chance to reconcile to one who sees past all I see
And reaching out my weary hand I pray that you’d understand
You’re the only one who’s faithful to me
You’re the only one who’s faithful to me

If I Had A Magic Wand

I really like Chris Rice’s music; he reminds me of a Christian James Taylor. Chris does a song called “Magic Wand” and I awoke with it running through my mind. That’s always a sign that God is trying to teach me something. Chris’ song taught me a new word—prestidigitator. It means sleight of hand and it is a word used to describe a magician.

One Day The Bridegroom Will Come

Imagine a bride preparing for her wedding day and yet not being in love with the bridegroom. Oh, now she loves him; she’s known him most of her life. She grew up knowing him and knowing that one day she would marry him. It had all been arranged beforehand. So the bride was ready to marry the bridegroom, she just wasn’t in love with him.

Spontaneous Love

Do you remember when you first fell in love with your spouse? When I was courting my bride Karen, everything reminded me of her! I was consumed by my love for her. That love for her has grown and matured over the years, but at times my love for her brings spontaneous and extraordinary desires in me to please her. This is not something I dwell on; it swells up inside of me.

I’ve come to realize that this spontaneous love is not of my doing; it is agape love…my unconditional love for my wife given to me from Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. My being in love with Jesus produces not only spontaneous love for my wife, but also and more importantly it results in spontaneous love for my Savior. It is a pure and unspoiled love; this is the essence of love that Paul described:

Our Sincerity Called Into Question

This weekend I listened to a lot of Christian music on my iTunes while working at my computer and it seemed as though a theme kept coming out in the songs I heard. It was as though God was trying to get my attention about something because the songs were being shuffled in random order.

Obviously He was and this message is primarily for men but ladies I imagine you can relate to this in your own relationship with Jesus or help your husbands in their relationships with the Lord.

The Godly Man Ceases

We live in evil times.

The level of moral rationalization has reached a peak I never thought would be mounted in America.

All for the sake of political pragmatism.
