Yesterday at church we sang the song “You Are God Alone” by Phillips, Craig & Dean (see video above). I particularly like the second verse that Shawn Craig sings because he belts out the last line with such power:

    You’re the only God
    Whose power none can contend
    You’re the only God
Whose name and praise will never end
    You’re the only God
Who’s worthy of everything we can give
    You are God
And that’s just the way it is

…that’s just the way it is. How can that statement be made. It must just be another sign of Christian intolerance! No, in theology it is known as prolegomena, a presupposition base on a priori knowledge. The Latin for a priori literally means “from the former.” It is a self-evident truth that is presupposed by experience. “We hold these truths to be self-evident…”

So what do Christians base their theology on and what are some examples of prolegomena? It starts at the very beginning of the Bible:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

Now the atheist or the skeptic would say, “Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! You can’t begin the beginning with ‘in the beginning God…’”! Yes we can and we do. Now you would need to take a class on systematic theology (which I highly recommend) to understand how we come to these conclusions, but let me share what Dr. Elmer Towns says in his seminal work Theology for Today:

“Prolegomena begins with the presuppositions that there is a God, that truth exists, and that a person can know truth. Therefore, as we begin our study, we assume there is a God and that the truth exists with Him. We assume we can know the truth, hence we can know about God or even come to know Him directly.”

Christianity is the only religion that 1) believes in a God that always has and will exist; 2) that God came in the flesh in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ; and 3) that our salvation can never be earned, it is an act of grace fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This alone dispels the currently popular notion that all religions lead to God and believe in the same God. Only Christianity claims salvation through grace; all other religions and beliefs rely on works for salvation.

Additionally, Jesus Christ, the object of Christians’ worship, is the only person to ever claim to be God and is the only one to ever claim to be the only way to God. And our Lord at the end of the Bible claims to be the only God, to have been the only God, and will be the only God:

“‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,’ says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” (Revelation 1:8)

Our Lord Jesus’ greatness was prophesied centuries before He came to earth:

“And He shall stand and feed His flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD His God; and they shall abide, for now He shall be great to the ends of the earth…” (Micah 5:4)

Do you believe in this Jesus, the One and Only true God? One day you will but it could be too late when you finally do confess Jesus as Lord.

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:5-11)

Here are some presuppositions that by faith you can embrace and be changed forever:

Jesus is God
Jesus came to earth as God in the flesh
Jesus lived life as fully man and fully God
Jesus died a horrible death on the cross whereby God the Father poured the sins of all mankind onto His Beloved Son.
Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after His death through the power of God.
Jesus is the only way to God the Father.

The Apostle Paul makes perfectly clear the way to salvation:

“…that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10)

I pray you have confessed Jesus as Lord. It may be hard to believe Jesus is God, but He is. All He asks of you is to exercise enough faith to believe this eternal truth. No matter the amount of logic and debate one uses to argue this truth will never make it untrue…

…and that’s just the way it is.

In Christ
