What should Christians do when government defies God? Is the supreme law of the land the US Constitution, the US Supreme Court, or any man-made institution or instrument? Or is Almighty God, the Creator of the heavens and earth, the supreme law of the land?

With the recent rulings from the US Supreme Court, it is long past time for the American Church to do as the Prophet Isaiah warned Israel:

“‘Come now, and let us reason together,’ says the LORD, ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.’” (Isaiah 1:18)

When America was founded, it was done so with the clear understanding that WE the People would ordain our government, one that would see that justice would prevail. King George and Parliament believed the colonies existed only because the Crown had deemed it appropriate.

When Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence, our nation’s birth certificate, he acknowledged that our rights do not come from man but from God. He and 55 other men believed this to be true and they signed their own death warrants by affixing their signatures to this precious document.

A famous synopsis of Jefferson’s quotes is found on panel three of the Jefferson Memorial:

“God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever. Commerce between master and slave is despotism. Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free. Establish a law for educating the common people. This it is the business of the state and on a general plan.”

So if God has ordained government and He has…

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” (Romans 13:1)

And if the purpose of government is to ensure justice, and it is…

“For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.” (Romans 13:3)

And if we are to assume that only the righteous should govern, and we should…

“For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” (Romans 13:4)

Then what should we do when our government disconnects from morality and religion, and it has? We have to call out to God in repentance and ask Him to once again be sovereign over our lives and our nation. Then those who reject morality and religion will understand the true meaning of liberty and its Author.

“Let them be confounded and dismayed forever; yes, let them be put to shame and perish, that they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth.” (Psalm 83:17-18)

Commenting on Psalm 83, Matthew Henry wrote:

“All who oppose the kingdom of Christ may here read their doom. God is the same still that ever he was; the same to his people, and the same against his and their enemies. God’s triumphs over his enemies, clearly prove that he is, according to his name JEHOVAH, an almighty Being, who has all power and perfection in himself. May we fear his wrath, and yield ourselves to be his willing servants. And let us seek deliverance by the destruction of our fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.”

Who are God’s enemies? They are those who oppose the principles for living our lives found in His holy word. The Bible is clear on marriage specifically and morality in general. If we continue to ignore “the social issues,” then we will continue to elect representatives who will eventually betray our principles because they lack a moral compass.

You are going to hear every reason in the book to ignore issues such as abortion and sodomy marriage because they have become “the law of the land.” Ignore them at your own personal peril. We will all, including you and me, have to give an account for every action and idle word.

If we will let a conscience guided by biblical principles direct our paths, then perhaps we will see the Third Great Awakening our nation so desperately needs. If not, then we may very well go the way of other nations that have come and gone.

God is not beholden to America; He has promised His people—those who follow Christ—that He will triumph as He always has and always will.

Will we be His people?

In Christ
