“David, do you really believe My Word is living and powerful?” the Lord asked me this morning.

“Yes Lord, you know I do”, I replied without hesitation.

“Do you really David?” God inquired.

“Yes Lord, you know I believe that”, I responded, becoming uncomfortable.

“Then why do you often not have the one and only weapon I have provided you for spiritual battle?” The Lord asked knowingly. “Go ahead and read the verse again” He commanded.

“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God…” (Ephesians 6:17)

“Yes, that’s the one…why do you neglect your weapon David? As a soldier you would have never even considered doing such a thing” the Lord reminded me.

“I just get so busy sometimes Lord and I don’t give myself enough time in the morning to read your Word Lord. I’m sorry and I really need to get back to spending time with you” I meekly reply.

“Yes you do David. Is it because you are so busy or is it because you are disobedient?” the Lord asked.

“David?”

“It’s because I am disobedient Father” I confessed.

“Good David, now what does My Word say about itself?” God asked.

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

“And what else does My Word say?” the Holy Spirit asked as He teaches me.

“And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, and made Me a polished shaft; in His quiver He has hidden Me.” (Isaiah 49:2)

“So then I have provided you with a means to experience victory have I not?” the Lord asked.

“Yes Father, you provide all I need” I agreed.

“And Who is your example for how to use this sword of the spirit?” God asked.

“Jesus” I said.

“Where, show Me” the Lord insisted.

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, ‘If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’ But He answered and said, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”’ Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: “He shall give His angels charge over you,” and, “In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”’ Jesus said to him, ‘It is written again, “You shall not tempt the LORD your God.”’ Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, ‘All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.”’ Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.” (Matthew 4:1-11)

“And what does that teach you David?” the Lord asked.

“It shows me that Satan knows the Word of God and will distort it even to Jesus. It also shows me that Jesus did not use anything but Your Word to counter Satan’s attack. He used the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God” I answered realizing how negligent I have been with the only offensive weapon there is in the whole armor of God. No wonder I take a beating somedays!

“I think you’re ready for the day David” the Lord encouraged me.

“Thank you Heavenly Father…thank you for your love, patience, and mercy with your wayward child. Thank you that you never give up on me, even when I give up on myself. Thank you for Jesus and for the Holy Spirit who ministers to me as I give Him preeminence. Thank you for you for the Bible, the Holy Word that I may use it to fight back in your power Lord in this spiritual battle. Thank you for loving me so Jesus. Amen” I prayed.

“Amen” my Father in Heaven replied.
