“If the guilt of sin is so great that nothing can satisfy it but the blood of Jesus; and the filth of sin is so great that nothing can fetch out the stain thereof but the blood of Jesus, how great, how heinous, how sinful must the evil of sin be.”

Australian Major General William Throsby Bridges has come to the crux of man’s conflict with sin. Man will do anything to over come the guilt of sin; he will bribe it, he will deny it, he will ignore it, he will intoxicate it, he will justify it…anything but confess it to the One with the only remedy to remove the guilt.

King David had committed a most heinous crime; let us remind ourselves of it before we read this morning’s passage from Psalm 51:

“Why have you despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon.” (2 Samuel 12:9)

As king, David had all means possible to humanly assuage his guilt but he knew better. He knew nothing removes the guilt of sin than the LORD:

“Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.” (Psalm 51:14-15)

Oh, how many times have I tried to do this in reverse order! I go to church and fake it during the music time, nod in agreement with the pastor’s message, and shake hands with folks praising God and blessing them, teach Sunday school, and then go home feeling empty.

Dear Jesus, deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, not the blood of Uriah the Hittite but Your precious blood my Jesus.

It is misery to wallow in sin; it is foolhardy to ignore it as the guilt rises to your chin almost to the point of spiritual drowning. Again David knew the misery of sin and cried out to God:

“For innumerable evils have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my head; therefore my heart fails me.” (Psalm 40:12)

O guilty one stop trying to run from your guilt! It is true, nothing can fetch out the stain thereof but the blood of Jesus Christ.

Why, why does it have to be His way or no way?!!

Because your sin, my sin is so heinous and evil. Nothing can fetch out the stain.

Confess your sin to Jesus right now. Be restored or better yet, be saved today if you’ve never confessed Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Whether you are saved today or restored as a believer, when you confess your sins and experience the forgiveness that comes only from the heavenly cleansing of Jesus’ blood can you then sing aloud of His righteousness.

Imagine going to church this Sunday renewed and experiencing the joy of God’s salvation…imagine how you will praise Him because His grace, love, and mercy have opened your lips.

How can you keep from singing His praise with such a pure and holy heart?

Beloved, do not try to deal with your bloodguilt any other way.

You cannot earn forgiveness.

You cannot wash away the heinous stain of sin from your soul.

You can do nothing, no sacrifice from you is sufficient to bring you the redemption you so desperately seek.

Nothing except for one thing that is.

More on that tomorrow.

In Christ
Dave
