We were once a Christian nation, one that openly worshiped the Lord Jesus Christ while allowing Americans the freedom to worship as they pleased. However that freedom, which I still fully support, has brought an apostasy to our once virtuous nation.
How did America become an apostate nation? I inquired of the Lord and asked Him; Father where did we go wrong as a nation? He pointed me to our beginning. Before the colonies were ever connected commercially and politically, they first became connected spiritually. The First Great Awakening came to the colonies in the 1730’s and 1740’s primarily through the preaching of George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards. This brought revival to the land as these and other great preachers taught about Christ and our liberty in Him. It was liberty in Christ that brought the desire for liberty as a people.
Fast forward to the post-modern era and we have preachers who will not even preach about sin, must less preach a sermon like Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.†The majority of pastors across America long ago abandoned the pulpit for profit and peace and when that happened the people began look to build their own God. It was no different in Moses’ time.
-
“Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, ‘Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’†(Exodus 32:1)
The people got tired of waiting. Whether they know it or not, Americans get tired of going from church to church and not hearing the truth of the spoken word. How else can you account for the growth of many churches that preach an unashamed and unapologetic gospel? Matthew Henry says this about a fidgety flock:
-
“Weariness in waiting betrays to many temptations. The Lord must be waited for till He comes, and waited for though He tarry. Let their readiness to part with their earrings to make an idol, shame our stinginess in the service of the true God…Having set up an image before them, and so changed the truth of God into a lie, their sacrifices were an abomination.â€
“…their sacrifices were an abomination.†An abomination…an Obamanation. While looking back on Israel’s history, the psalmist reminded them of the episode recorded in Exodus 32.

“They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped the molded image. Thus they changed their glory into the image of an ox that eats grass. They forgot God their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, wondrous works in the land of Ham, awesome things by the Red Sea. Therefore He said that He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach, to turn away His wrath, lest He destroy them.†(Psalm 106:19-23)
How could the Israelites exchange their glory for a cow that chews its cud?! How could America exchange the righteousness that once exalted this nation for unborn genocide and sodomy marriage? How could America change from a nation of each person pulling his own weight and neighbor helping neighbor to a sinful entitlement mentality that is bankrupting our nation and hocking our children and grandchildren’s future?
Simple. Moral relativism and political correctness. Pastors instead of pounding their fists on the pulpit are now hiding under them. And America does not have a Moses to overcome the wrath of God caused by Aaron and his priests. America has “WE the People.â€
We the people ordained and established our Constitution for the United States of America to form a more perfect Union. Our Union has never been more deformed.
We the people ordained and established our Constitution for the United States of America to establish justice. Justice has never been in more disarray than today.
We the people ordained and established our Constitution for the United States of America to insure domestic Tranquility and yet America finds itself in a social civil war over a number of issues.
We the people ordained and established our Constitution for the United States of America to provide for the common defence and we can’t even build a fence on our borders much less defend it from an enemy from within.
We the people ordained and established our Constitution for the United States of America to promote the general Welfare and instead we have become a nation that provides welfare to all who would come to America, legally or illegally.
We the people ordained and established our Constitution for the United States of America to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity and we give up our liberties more and more each day and burden our Posterity with an unpayable debt.
We the people must rise up. We must encourage our pastors to once again preach not only the messages of Whitefield and Edwards and Charles G. Finney and Dwight L. Moody, but also of Adrian Rogers, David Jeremiah, John MacArthur and David Wilkerson to name just a few. Ask your pastor this weekend if he has ever read Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.â€
We individually need to turn our hearts to Jesus, share the gospel with all whom God gives us opportunity, bring light to the darkness and salt to the rot, and love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
If we will do that then we as a nation will not have many gods that shall go before us; we will have the Triune God, the Creator of the Universe, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ will go before us!!
Oh, would that happen in my lifetime.
In Christ
Dave
